BIG HEART #1, 2005-2006
This is the first of three anatomical hearts sculpted from 3
burls (abnormal tree growth) culled over the years from the
woods, carpeting the narrow Digby Peninsula (’Digby Neck’),
separating Saint Mary’s Bay from the Bay Fundy in south
west Nova Scotia.
As narratives, the intrinsic shapes of the burls determine the
particular caricature of anatomical heart. The varied grain,
color, and “sap runs” of this wood species dictates that the
product be painted…… (currently in prinme stage).
